//Meet the Staff Monday: Indira Diaz

Indira Diaz recently began as the Office Manager for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Career Services – Daytona Beach campus.

Discuss your background prior to starting at ERAU.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Communications and Journalism from Fermín Toro University in Venezuela. I’ve worked in many radio and TV stations in my home city, and I also work for the public system as a President of the Tourism Corporation of Barquisimeto County.  My work there was organizing and overseeing all the official city’s events (International City Fair, Carnivals, Christmas, Back to School, etc.), with this background I decided to move forward and I start my own business as an Event Planner until I moved to United States.

Here, I’ve been focusing myself on Customer Service and Restaurants, being Team Leader in Pollo Tropical and Panda Express and working as an Administrative Assistant in Young Bear Environmental Consulting Services (YBE Consulting).

What is your current role within ERAU’s Career Services?

As an Office Manager in the Career Services Office I work on the Front Desk offering Customer Service to the students and alumni mostly. I supervise our Students Assistants and Graduate Assistant, but also I help on their hire process and continuous training.

Also, I collaborate with the Fall and Spring Industry/Career Expo organization, communications, attendees and payments.

What is the best part of your job?

Working with and for students. Helping them in their personal and professional growth. Contributing in the training of citizens with excellent technical and academic training, and observe their evolution since they arrive for their first interview until they get or end their internship or until they get a job, is without a doubt the best part of my job.

What keeps you motivated?

My family is my biggest motivation. Being an example of perseverance for my children motivates me every day to look forward with encouragement and hope and above all to not decay, even when the circumstances seems dark.Wanting to build, from my actions, a better world is something that keeps me excited and motivated every day as well

Why should students use career services in your opinion?

I always say it, I would have liked to have an office like this at my university. When I studied, the only thing I received was a letter from the University that I had to present in the companies where I would like to apply. The letter asked me to be accepted as an intern, I really felt lost in many aspects. The student assistance is great and dedicated, not only for the fact of helping to get internships or jobs, but also because you have countless resources to help you show you as a professional with potential, they work with you to achieve your goals. The staff is really concerned to meet the needs of students/alumni. In particular, I respect the work they do and I feel happy to belong to this office.

What is a cherished childhood memory you want to share?

My father is present in almost all the memories that I have of my childhood and part of my youth. He left us when I was 15 years old. Our vacations were always something special, many times we went to a city called Merida, which is very cold and that occasionally snows, we had a cabin there where we enjoyed a lot, my dad likes to compose songs and, in fact, sang very well, Merida It was a place of inspiration for him, there he composed a beautiful song for my sisters and me. I still remember as if it was yesterday the first time he sang it for us.
